So we left off last time having assessed where we’re at overall in the categories we care about.
We even took the chaotic brainstorming results and put them into some sort of reasonable order.
Now we need to figure out what our priorities should be. Some of these things are going to be more important than others.
Take the lists that you made by category and take a look at each one. Assess where you’re at via some metric that is as objective as possible.
I prefer either a 1-5 scale with 1 being the “Oh No” level and 5 being “No sweat, got it covered”
Beyond that, and somewhat similar to the scale assessment above, wherever possible convert that into time as well. Easy for stuff like food, less so for something like ammo or medical supplies.
At this point your basic priorities are reasonably easy to figure out. You want to bump the lower numbers up to match the levels of your higher categories. This is still the time to be objective, and not subjective.
In other words, don’t let your priorities be influenced by the situation you’re expecting … YET.
In real terms, if you have a ‘4’ for food storage, a ‘3’ for ammo, and a ‘1’ for food production, your food production will be a priority until you get it bumped up to a 3 or 4, and so on.
Rudy’s Tip: I think it’s easiest to put this stuff into a spreadsheet to help with the relative prioritization. You can do it on note cards or something if you want, but use the tech!
Once your priorities are set at a reasonable objective baseline, it’s time to bust out the subjectiveness.
First, look at environmental or timing related factors that may influence your decision. For example, at the time I’m writing this gardening season is near. It would be reasonable to bump food production and get some seeds and whatnot shipped even if you’ve got higher priority things on the list.
Then, take a look at the situation you know is coming down the pipe (in other words, the trigger for your 90 day sprint) and modify priorities even farther.
Now that you’ve taken your current prep levels, assessed them, and then done an intelligent prioritization (objective priorities first, then modify with subjective situational factors) you’re all ready to start planning.
