  1. RE: so-called ‘death panels’: We already have death panels. They are called insurance companies. There was a woman in California who got a big raise for tossing a lot of sick people off the insurance company’s rolls, and there are numerous instances of a lack of a penny or some other miniscule infraction resulting in a person who is ill losing their insurance. Insurance companies have to give their tacit approval for many procedures and can arbitrarily deny permission, and therefore coverage, whenever they want to. There are regular news stories about these sorts of things.

    The family of the girl denied a transplant because it was considered ‘experimental’ although it had been done before thousands of times and was the accepted treatment for her condition didn’t have to worry about government involvement; it was just them and the insurance company going toe-to-toe.
