How to prepare your family to survive and thrive in todays uncertain world

Newsletter – 1/25/2011

(NOTE: I’m going to be posting the weekly newsletter on the site at the end of each week. It goes out to the mailing list at the beginning of the week, so be sure to sign up here if you aren’t already on it!)

Welcome to the newsletter for the week of January 24, 2011. This newsletter and those for the next couple of weeks will be coming out on Tuesdays instead of Monday, because I have started taking a beekeeping class on Monday nights. So, the schedule switches!

On The Topic Of Beekeeping

I’ll be writing a detailed post about the class at some point. Not sure I’ll write about it every week, but probably not just once or twice either. In any case, there was one thing I wanted to touch on. Like many of you, my exposure to local raw honey has been somewhat limited.

Well, I had no idea what I was missing. The guy teaching the class runs a local store and he brought samples of a dozen or so different types of honey. The different taste profiles were amazing. I’ll be heading over to his store to buy some of his honey to share the experience with my family.

If you’ve never tried raw honey, go try it. It’s so much better than the over-processed stuff you get at the store there is really no comparison. Now that I know what I’ve been missing, I’ll have a hard time eating anything else.

Food Safety and your Health

I’ve been toying with a post idea in my head for a while to lay out exactly why GMO foods are such a bad idea. To top that off, it is also important to be careful about what is in your food for health reasons.

Today I saw an article about Taco Bell being sued over their beef products. Apparently the ‘seasoned ground beef’ that they sell in their tacos is only 35% beef and contains all sorts of other binders and fillers, such as wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodextrin, and corn starch. Yikes!

Look, we all know fast food isn’t all that healthy, but sometimes it’s one of those things you just sorta eat. And honestly, it’s not just fast food. Ever look at the back of a box of quasi-prepared food in the store? If you can’t pronounce it, you should reconsider eating it!

It’s even more important today to focus on eating healthy food than ever before. Be careful who you buy from, and pay more to buy local, whether it’s produce, meat, or any other product. Avoid over-processed and chemically enhanced foods. Your health will be so much the better for it.

A Few Other Links To Check Out

Here’s a couple other interesting articles for you to check out.

First, the US Justice Department wants to force your Internet and cell phone providers to retain records of your activities for two years. They’re claiming the usual … they need it to fight child exploitation, terrorism, etc etc. We need to fight this. It’s an unreasonable demand and it allows the government to clamp down on free speech under the guise of fighting crime.

Second, I read an article about a ‘recent wave of police officer shootings’ around the country. Read the article, then go and read Karl Denningers opinion. I gotta say, I am feeling quite a bit like Karl on this one. I know plenty of good cops, but there is absolutely no excuse for the way departments around the country conduct themselves.

I think the ‘wave’ isn’t a wave, but simply a cluster of terrible random events. The fact that the powers that be are using the shootings as a way to create a sense of fear and panic in the general population is completely reprehensible and they should be ashamed. And honestly, if we didn’t treat violent criminals with kid gloves, our officers and the general population at large would be far safer. But in the name of political correctness, we let them out where they can inflict even more damage. And then the politicians wonder why…

Finally, I read with amusement that Jesse “The Body” Ventura, former governor of Minnesota, has sued the TSA and DHS for their invasive patdowns. I’m fully behind him on this one, since airport security is nothing but a joke, and a clear violation of the Constitution. I’m not going to get started, because I could write all night on this one, but suffice it to say that once again, public safety is NOT a reason to infringe upon our rights.

Well, That’s All, Folks

That’s all for this week. As always, if you have any questions or want to suggest future newsletter topics, just reply to this mail. I love reader email and read every single message I get, even if I don’t always have time to respond.
