Anything from simple theft to muggings and even violent home invations seems to be possible where it wasn’t particularly likely before.
At this point I believe that it’s important for each and every one of us to review our situation and the places where we usually are with an eye towards personal and family safety as well as making ourselves and our homes a harder target.
This means being able to protect and defend your family through whatever means you are comfortable with.
It means taking a hard look at what layers of security you have put in place at your home and potentially at your work.
You also need to make sure that in your day to day travels you increase your overall awareness. Know where you are, know what’s around you, and know who is around you. Be aware of where you may be stuck (think traffic lights) and what you’d do if someone wished to do you harm.
We all want to believe that nothing will ever happen to us. But it can. And for too many of us, it does.
So be aware, be prepared. Think, plan, and implement.
Yes, this may mean moving out of your comfort zone a bit. It may mean getting a dog, carrying pepper spray or even a firearm. It’s a very personal decision, and I urge you to think long and hard about it. Look at your area and the places you frequent and decide what you need to do.
We thought our area was safe. And by and large it is. But that hasn’t stopped our cars from getting broken into, and the neighbor’s cars from getting broken into twice over the last few months.
Be careful. Be aware. Be prepared.
